The Tempero family originally emigrated from England in 1860 and took up residence in the town of Oamaru (pronounced "om-ah-roo"), a coastal town on the eastern seaboard of the South Island of New Zealand. At that time New Zealand was in its early settlement days. As well as having a thriving agricultural economy, extensive gold deposits had been found in the mountainous back country areas, with Oamaru serving as a focal point for trade through its deep water port.

Those prosperous times led to the development of an impressive commercial district and town center, largely built during the period of 1860's - 1880's that today remains as New Zealand's most complete collection of Victorian buildings. These areas are now preserved under the care of the Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust, giving Oamaru a permanent link to its historic past. The twentieth and twenty first centuries have had little impact on the peaceful colonial atmosphere of Oamaru.
