The original Listers were criticised for their somewhat Spartan interiors, so Costin responded with elegant and comfortable seats. The interior of our car reflects Costin’s original aims and has been re-upholstered with luxurious padded leather seats and center console in a contrasting shade of green.
While the body shop and upholstery department were busy working on their portions of the car, the mechanical parts were being attended to in Tempero’s engineering department.
The front and rear suspension and steering
were removed and checked for condition and alignment. New springs were installed (rated at 425lbs front and 300lbs rear), while the original Carrera 3-way adjustable road/racing shock absorbers were refurbished. A new front anti-roll bar of 19mm diameter was fabricated and installed. The original extra-stiff 890/800lb springs and 1” roll bar are available to the new owner if desired. All new suspension/steering bushes and wheel bearings were fitted during the assembly process.
The disk brakes are Jaguar 4-pot at the front and 2-pot at the rear, with the fronts being power assisted. These were completely dismantled and reconditioned, with new pistons, seals and pads fitted all round.
The engine was fully restored to the original specifications as it left the Tempero factory. The block was rebored and fitted with new pistons and rings, the crankshaft was polished and fitted with new bearings, while all other components such as timing chains, tensioners and so on were renewed where required. The cylinder head was completely reconditioned and fitted with new valves. The engine is also fitted with a crankshaft fluid damper and triple 45DCOE Dellorto carburettors. The exhaust headers are extractor type and have been newly treated with a high temperature metal-sprayed coating in white.
The transmission consists of a five speed alloy-cased all synchromesh gearbox, a Tilton three plate racing clutch and a limited slip differential. The cooling system was also attended to, with a brand new racing-style aluminium radiator fabricated and installed. All new hoses and clips were naturally fitted at the same time.
A brand new set of Alloy peg-drive D-Type wheels have been manufactured by Temperos for the car. A matching set of four new peg-drive hubs have also been manufactured and installed, complete with a set of 3-eared spinners and high performance radial ply tires.
The car is now as new both mechanically and in the body and interior. Performance is nothing short of stunning, with close to 300bhp powering a body that weighs less than 2000 pounds. This car is eminently driveable on the street, or, if the new owner wishes to race it again, it is fresh and strong and will respond to whatever level of tuning is desired.
The end result is the car you see here, a faithful reproduction of one of the rarest Jaguar-based racing cars, the aluminium bodied Costin Lister Jaguar by Tempero.
